Beat The Heat – Heatwave Tips & Advice

While sunshine can lift our spirits, hot weather can pose serious health risks well before temperatures reach extreme levels. Following the recent heatwave, this is the latest advice from the UK Health Security Agency.

Beat the Heat

☀️ Avoid the hottest part of the day – Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm where possible. Wear a hat, use SPF 30+ sunscreen, and plan exercise, gardening, dog walks, or other physical activities for the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.
💊 Check your medication – Some medicines can affect how your body responds to heat. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you’re unsure.
👕 Dress for the weather – Choose lightweight, loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that allows your skin to breathe.
🏠 Keep your home cool – Close curtains, blinds, and windows during the day to keep heat out. Open windows at night when temperatures drop.
💧 Stay hydrated – Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Drink water regularly throughout the day and limit alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.
🧊 Cool your body down – Use a damp cloth, splash cool water on your face and wrists, or take a cool shower to lower your body temperature.
🏛️ Find a cool space – If you are out and about, or your home becomes too warm, spend time in air-conditioned or cooler public spaces such as libraries, community centres, shops, or cafés.
⚠️ Know the warning signs-  Dizziness, headaches, muscle cramps, nausea, confusion, or excessive tiredness can all be signs of heat-related illness. Move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
🤝 Look out for each other – Check in on older relatives, neighbours, friends, and anyone who may be vulnerable during hot weather. Consider asking someone to check in on you too.
