Reduced water bills for disabled households announced

Low-income disabled households are set to benefit from reduced water bills under planned changes to the WaterSure scheme in England and Wales.

The government has confirmed that Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Attendance Allowance will be added to the list of qualifying benefits. This means more disabled households will be eligible for support.

WaterSure caps water bills so households do not pay more than the average metered bill in their area. To qualify, households must have a water meter (or be waiting for one) and a high essential use of water, such as for medical needs or larger families.

Under the new rules, households with an income below £25,745 and receiving one of the newly included disability benefits will be able to apply. The process will also be simpler, with less need for GP evidence.

Further changes to pricing rules mean most current WaterSure customers could save up to £100 per year.

The reforms are expected to come into force in early 2027. Water companies in England will be required to adopt the changes, while in Wales this will be voluntary.
