Hot Weather Vehicle Security Tips

Enjoying the sunshine? Don’t give thieves an opportunity. This is the latest advice from the police.

As temperatures rise, people often leave windows open, valuables on display, or vehicles unattended for longer periods, creating opportunities for thieves. Please take a few minutes to read the below tips and advice to secure you vehicle.

Lock it every time

Always lock your vehicle, even if you’re only away for a few minutes. Ensure all windows, sunroofs and convertible roofs are fully secured.

Remove valuables

Never leave bags, phones, wallets, laptops, sunglasses, sat navs or charging cables in the vehicle, or if unavoidable, make sure they are not visible. Take items with you or lock them in an unseen, secure location when you arrive at your destination.

Keep keys secure

Never leave keys in the ignition while cooling down, or popping into a shop. Store vehicle keys away from doors and windows at home.

Close windows

Hot weather often leads to drivers leaving windows slightly open. Even a small gap can allow offenders access. Ensure windows and sunroofs are fully closed when parked.

Be extra vigilant at beauty spots

Car parks at parks, reservoirs, tourist attractions and beauty spots are popular targets during warm weather.

Take personal data with you

Remove documents containing your address or personal information. Avoid leaving work equipment, uniforms, or identity passes in vehicles.

Park smart

Use well-lit, busy car parks. Park where there is CCTV coverage when possible. At home, park in a garage or on a driveway if available.

Watch for relay theft

If your vehicle has keyless entry, consider using a signal-blocking pouch for the keys. Check whether your vehicle manufacturer offers software updates or additional security features.

A bag, phone or even a charging cable left on display can be enough to attract a thief.
