The older people’s organisation, Ageing Better, is pushing for more action on making homes accessible – here’s what they have to say on this important issue:
Over a year has passed since the government committed to raising minimum accessibility standards for new homes but we are yet to see any action. To coincide with the anniversary, we sent a letter to the Financial Times jointly with social housing provider Habinteg, urging the government to carry out its plans.
Currently, building homes to be accessible and adaptable is purely optional. Few of the 13,000 homes built every month in the UK are suitable for older and disabled people.
