As we round up the year, we are really excited to tell you about some ground-breaking research carried out by the University of York. This research found that deaf people with hearing dogs have significantly better mental well-being, are less dependent on others, and have fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to those waiting for a hearing dog. They were also significantly less likely to feel isolated and fearful, either in the home or when out and about.
The study provides solid evidence to support what we see every day – that our amazing dogs make a monumental difference to deaf people’s lives. You can find out more about what was found in the study here.
10-year-old James is one of the deaf children being helped by a hearing dog. In this month’s newsletter, you’ll find out how James’s hearing dog, Kandy, is the best Christmas present he has ever received. Kandy has reduced James’s anxiety and made him feel more confident. It is only because of your support that we can continue training these incredible dogs – dogs that alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds and help them to leave loneliness behind and reconnect with life. Young James once felt anxious and lacked confidence. Today, if you ask him how he feels about hearing dog Kandy, he will tell you, through tears of love: “Kandy makes me feel joyful and happy.”
