Department for Work & Pensions Disability Updates

Severe Disability Premium (SDP)

The regulations to remove the SDP Gateway from 27 January 2021 were made in 2019.

From this date the current restrictions preventing claimants with an SDP entitlement from claiming Universal Credit (UC) have been lifted. Under the new regulations, those claimants may receive an additional amount of UC (a “transitional SDP element”) as part of their award if they meet the eligibility criteria.

The new regulations also ensure that should a couple separate prior to claiming UC both partners are treated the same when being considered for a transitional SDP element when making a new UC claim.

Face covering exemptions

On 24 July face coverings became mandatory in shops, supermarkets, shopping centres and enclosed transport hubs in England. However, this is not mandatory for people with disabilities or certain health conditions that make it difficult for them to wear a face covering.

Free exemption cards and badges are available for those who may feel more comfortable showing something that says they do not have to wear a face covering because they are exempt. These can be downloaded onto a mobile phone or printed out.
